Topic: Is it a good idea to use avatars to replace humans as teachers in schools?
Perform a quick research on the functions and abilities of avatars. Based on the information you have found, consider whether these functions are sufficient to meet the skills and abilities required of a teacher in schools. Are there any areas where avatars are unable to replace humans as teachers? (10-15 mins) Finally, write down what you think are the advantages and disadvantages of using avatars as teachers. (15 mins) Advantages : 1. Teachers can teach several classes at once. Examples/evidence : Professor Henry Fuchs, Federico Gil Professor of Computer Science, University of North Carolina (Chapel Hills), says, “You could be, for instance, a doctor who’s visiting a patient one room to another room, even though you are a thousand kilometres away. You could be the child who visits her ageing parent even though you're in a different country.” 2. Lessons can be more interesting. Examples/evidence : Avatars will make full use of IT to teach.
Disadvantages : 1. Avatars lack human interaction with the class.
Examples/evidence : Scientists say that it cannot fully replicate human interaction.
2. Avatars cannot change real life situations.
Examples/evidence : Professor Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann, Director, Institute for Media Innovation, Nanyang Technological University, says, “It is in fact an illusion that you are here, and I cannot do anything except talking or making gestures because each one in the reality is isolated. I never think it will change the real-life situations. It will just favour, help us to live situations where we cannot be together.”

I strongly feel that avatars should not replace human teachers in schools. Although by using avatars, more classes can be taught at a time, I still feel that human teachers are much more better in teaching that avatars. Firstly, these avatars will not be able to make as much gestures as normal human beings. This is a great disadvantage because hand gestures are crucial while a teacher is talking as it helps the student pay more attention to the teacher and more information can be absorbed. If the avatar is unable to make hand gestures, classes will be extremely boring for a student and students will not be able to learn properly. Secondly, many human teachers will lose their jobs. This will lead to a fall in the economy because many people in the world work in the education industry. Therefore, I strongly feel that avatars should not replace human teachers in schools.
