Wong Yi Xuan of 2 Empathy

I think that having a robot as a teacher is a rather inconvenient idea. Having a robot as a teacher does not know how to analyse problems that programming and calculations are not able to help in. Example are like, students having various methods of learning things, some student might be able to get a better grasp of the topic by acting or carrying out the activity, while some other students might just be able to absorb what is taught by reading examples. That is what a human teacher with many years of teaching experience will be able to analyse and carry out, and not a robot teacher that is programmed can do. Apart from that, robot teachers will not be able to know when the student is restless and needs a brain break, or when the pupils are not paying attention or misbehaving. A human teacher will be there to give them what they need to continue studying at a more efficient pace. Apart from studies, a survey done by UNICEF tells us that being a good teacher is required to interact with the children physically and emotionally. And that is what really differentiates between a human and a robot teacher. A human teacher can tell when something is up on his/her students mind, not a robot teacher. A good teacher is someone who teaches not only with minds, but also with hearts.

Advantages :
  1. Robot avatars helps teaching in overloaded classrooms and increases the learning of the students

Examples/evidence :

2. There were some huge battles in New Jersey with parents and the PTA which actually made it into a NYT Article. Some top researchers are looking into the new technologies to help with this problem. One super star psychologist stated that more research was needed with special kids and their self-esteem when using electronic teaching tools, collaborative networks and eLearning Initiatives. She indeed, brings up an interesting subject about Avatars, 3D, VR eLearning in the UK.

Disadvantages :
  1. The disadvantages of having a robot as a teacher is the lack of human teaching experience.

Examples/evidence :

  1. Having a robot as a teacher, the robot will not know when the students are not paying attention, or when they are misbehaving. Furthermore, students have different ways to learn efficiently, some students learn better by acting out what is taught, while others might absorb more information by seeing what the meaning is. And so, all this teaching skills cannot be replaced by robots, as some things cannot be taught or programmed.
